RE: Heavy-duty short bed ...

IIRC a short bed regular cab 250/2500 pickup has never been offered. Maybe in the '60s, but definitely not in the last 30 years. Maybe someone can prove otherwise?

RE: 3.0L Duramax teardown

The owner of that truck must have been really ignorant to ignore a low oil warning for that long. I would think that the difference in oil level between a warning light and catastrophic engine failure would be pretty significant. The guy in the video seemed to think that the timing chain tensioner depended on oil pressure to maintain tension, and when oil pressure was lost the chain loosened, resulting in the Mickey Mouse ears permanently imprinted in the top of the pistons. Not sure how that would explain the grenaded rod bearing though. Either way, I guess this is what happens when you never bother changing or even checking the oil.

RE: F550 thoughts?

You must be clairvoyant. Where did you get all those "stats" on the as yet unnamed vehicle/motorhome? Unless the OP edited the original post, the motorhome is not unnamed. It's an F550, which has hydraulic brakes, and the GVWR and GCWR figures are readily available online.

RE: RV built with hole in the Floor (Thor/Four Winds/Mandalay)

I have been wondering if that hole had something to do with a tranny. Maybe for a stick shift. That would totally make sense... not :S The hole is right inline with the brake pedal, not where a shifter would be if there were such a thing as a newer manual transmission class A motorhome. I agree with Doug (an expert RV tech) that it's some type of access hole for repair or maintenance. Covering it isn't a bad idea, as long as the cover is easily removable.

RE: 2006 Fleetwood Tioga 26Q 4 season capability?

Having access to a 110V hookup will make her life much easier when it gets cold at night. A propane RV furnace will keep it warm enough in most winter conditions, but the typical single house battery won't survive the night running the furnace blower. She'll blow through the propane as well. Plugged in, running a ceramic heater or oil filled radiator will keep her warmer. Boondocking in the winter is possible, but to do it well she would need some battery upgrades.

RE: Onan Generator Oil Filter Crossthreaded

I think your service department screwed up royally and are trying to make you pay for it. If the previous servicer had cross threaded the filter boss, your filter would have probably leaked. Have you always had your generator serviced at this shop?

RE: Semi's as tow Vehicles

I am one that tows with a semi and when we bought ours (with the Smart car) we got the package for around. $33,000, two years ago we converted a friend's truck he bought, truck $18,000 (2005 Volvo) then they got a 2015 Smart for around $8,000. Deals can be found but take time Did you single yours, or is it still a tandem? I've considered going this route, I have a few thousand miles in a mid 2000s Freightliner Columbia pulling a 53', and even the "Freightshaker" was very easy to drive and comfortable on the highway. I can imagine a quality truck like a KW with full air ride would be even more so, pulling a relatively light RV.

RE: Suggestions when looking at used Class A motor homes

I know a Cummins diesel engine should go for 400K plus miles but why are RV’s needing rebuilt with under 100K miles, is it because they site too much and the engines are not designed to sit? Or, is it because they are overworked by the large home they are pulling and undersized motors? I guess the same is true for gas Class A rigs, any opinions on this from someone who has had to rebuild a motor with low miles? I haven't personally had to deal with rebuilding a diesel in a motorhome with low miles, but I think the lack of use and poor maintenance is part of the issue with low mileage engine failures in diesel motorhomes. There is also a broad range of durability among the various sizes of Cummins and other diesels you'll find in motorhomes. The 5.9 and 6.7 B series motors are fantastic engines, but in a 40 foot pusher pulling a 10K trailer, they are right at their limit. But the pushers with the "big block" diesels commonly found in class 8 trucks (in the 12 to 15 liter range) will last 1,000,000 miles with proper maintenance, and a 40K rig pulling a 10K trailer is nothing for these engines. But with those big engines comes higher purchase, fuel, maintenance and repair costs if something does break.

RE: Silverado 1500 Diesel - First impressions

I know GM was hoping for a 10% take rate on the baby Dmax, I am not sure what they currently are at, but they are offering it in more trimlines than ever before. You could take that as either they are giving you more options to have that engine to get more people to buy it, or it's so popular that people are demanding it in more trimlines. I agree probably regardless of the take rate, that this could disappear at anytime. I think from a spec standpoint they really hit the sweet spot. Right amount of hp, torque, killer mpg and it seems pretty dang dependable. See a lot of them around here between contractors and farmers primarily it seems. Agreed, especially since it's virtually the same MSRP as the 5.3 and probably will tow better. The guy across the street from me has one and he regularly hits the high 20s for mpg on road trips, not towing of course.

RE: Tow truck ideas / advice

Budget? Do you want something that will work or something that is overkill like a 1 ton? Truck or SUV or you don't have a preference? something that can sensibly handle that travel trailer would be ok, I'd be interested to know what the smaller size could be and if I'd drive it daily too (not so keen on that idea)... a Truck as we always have that issue of taking bikes.... Budget - reality is we've never had a car payment, but we don't have much spare cash. If I keep my car then we'd have about $10,000 to put down towards a truck, then a loan, if I sold my car we'd have additional $25,000... my daily driving is highway to and from work and to kids sports so a big truck would be total overkill though... Really don't want anything too high mileage that ends up with issues. We are attached to the Excursion and it runs well..but cannot get this wobbly steering issue fixed, well maybe, by sinking another $5000 or so into it.. Here it's almost got no value, can't legally smog it now in CA either..... Outside of CA diesel Excursions go for stupid money, so if you can sell it out of state you should do fine. Hard to believe you couldn't get the steering fixed for $5K- the front suspension and steering on those rigs is relatively simple. Being a Ford, it will never be perfect, but I think you must have brought it to the wrong shop. On the topic of a replacement rig, it will be pretty tough to find a "smaller" replacement rig that will tow a 6200 lb dry weight trailer very well. Suburbans, Expeditions and 1500 series pickups will do the job if configured decently (payload could be an issue), but they really aren't much smaller than an Excursion. Anything significantly smaller than an Ex just won't work IMO.

RE: Progressive RV Insurance requires you to have another car?

If you haven't already, try calling the Washington Insurance Commissioners hotline at 800-562-6900. They may be able to answer your question more accurately than an internet forum. (especially this one) ;)

RE: Help identify high volume truck dealers

Dennis Dillon sells GMC also, but they don't have as many HD pickups in stock as they do Ram.

RE: Need 24-36 5th wheels a year-New or quality used...

RVs are really not designed for longer term living like you described, although some do live in them. Manufactured housing might be a better option, a basic single wide like this costs about the same as a basic 5th wheel RV, has twice the square footage, and meets residential energy codes (easier to heat and cool). Moving and setup costs would be higher, of course. For this many units on a site, you're looking at significant costs for installation of utilities, etc.

RE: Hard sided campers under 1500lbs with 6' int ht spreadsheet.

Most vehicles also have a limit on the frontal area of the trailer in tow, some as low as 20 square feet. A 90" tall hardside trailer will work the tow vehicle harder and burn more fuel at highway speeds than the same weight trailer that is much lower. What is your tow vehicle?

RE: Buying a new TT, questions on TV setup

The 8-spd with 3.08 diff is better than 6-spd with 3.42 which in prior years was rated for over 9000 pounds. Power will not be a problem. I do highly recommend spending $300 at a trans shop for a higher capacity transmission cooler with either trailer. Get the one your wife likes better and enjoy camping. Absolutely. People fixate on the tall rear axle ratio and don't realize that an 8 speed with 3.08 gears (4.56 x 3.08= 14.04) will launch better on a hill than an older 4L60E with 4.10 gears (3.06 x 4.10= 12.54) . The shorter (numerically higher) rear axle gears will always launch better given a particular trans, but the newer trans ratios help immensely.

RE: Flat tow 2016 Equinox

You don't state which motorhome you have- generally the Equinox with a GVWR of under 5000 pounds should be no problem for a V10. Many newer class Cs, for example, with this engine can tow 7500 lbs. But you need to check your particular motorhome's towing capacity, hitch capacity and gross combined weight rating (GCWR) to know for sure.

RE: Isuzu 4x4 towing a F250 Ram

That was quite a rig and quite an adventure! They are certainly raising those boys right. Interesting that SES uses a plain old Ford pickup for a recovery vehicle- I would think that a shorter version of that Isuzu would be better.

RE: Air Travel From Seattle SEATAC

I've used Wally Park a few times and found them to be reasonably priced and reasonably secure. The parking in the airport garage is horribly expensive, and some of the cheaper lots are prone to vehicle break-ins.

RE: Towing a Jeep Cherokee

Can my 2021 Coachmen 32fs flat tow a Jeep Cherokee with proper transmission and drive My question concerns the weight of the car towed Thanks Yes, no problem. Your rig has a 7500 lb towing capacity when fully loaded, both hitch and GCWR are rated for this. You'll want a toad braking system, but do your homework since there are no design or manufacturing standards I'm aware of that cover these systems.
